Gundam
Seed Destiny (Kidou Senshi Gundam SEED DESTINY)
Gundam Seed v2.0
// Synopsis: Two years after the
fateful battle at Jachin Due, tensions are still running high between
the Naturals and the Coordinators. War erupts when a cabal of powerful
figures orchestrate world events. Caught up in the fighting is the crew
of the Minerva starship, but in the fog of war it's difficult to determine
who the true enemy is.
// Review: I'm re-writing this review
because I accidentally watched Destiny before Gundam
Seed. Having just finished it I feel like you need to know that
not only is Gundam Seed superior, but Destiny is a complete re-hash
and rip off of it.
/ In this "sequel," the Coordinators (genetically altered
humans who live in space) and the Naturals (normal humans on Earth)
have an uneasy cease fire after the events of Gundam Seed. But after
a terrorist action, all of the world's nations pick sides and go to
war. Squeezed in the middle is the neutral island nation of Orb.
/ Instead of ZAFT stealing 4 prototype Gundams from the Earth Alliance,
the Earth Alliance steals 3 prototype Gundams from ZAFT. Ooh. That's
as original as Matthew McConaughey in a romantic comedy playing a frat
boy. Basically Destiny takes everything from Gundam Seed and flips it.
The good guys are the bad guys and the bad guys are the good guys. The
focus is more on Athrun instead of Kira. There is even another super
weapon that ZAFT uses, the other side sports a brand new prototype battleship,
oh and the clones are back. Here's a suggestion: If you want to use
clones as a mysterious plot point again, don't make them the exact same
ones as the last time. I can't tell if I'm being insulted or if the
writers only had a 15 minute cigarette break to come up with this cash
in.
/ Destiny still sticks to the formula that made Gundam Seed popular:
lots of mech action. Even though they obviously recycle battle footage,
the fighting is still great to see on epic scales. But it's bogged down
because since it apes itself, the storyline becomes too predictable.
They also decided to add a lot of contrived philosophical rants and
the new hot shot character which the story also revolves around is a
huge dick.
// Wrap up: If you liked Gundam
Seed and are a fan of mech anime, you'll probably enjoy this one. But
it's not ground breaking or original. You'll get exactly what you expect.
