FLCL / Fooly Cooly (anime)

January3

Anime on Red Bull

// Synopsis: Naota is a middle school boy who complains that nothing exciting ever happens in his town. Soon after a bizarre girl on a Vespa whacks him in the head with her electric guitar. Horns began to sprout on his head which robots from other dimensions emerge from that she battles. More zaniness ensues.

// Review: Hyper-active, confusing, abstract, random, non-sequitur, non-sensical. Even after watching it and reading about it online I’m still not exactly sure what it’s all about.

/ Somewhere underneath its frenetic music video-like appearance is some type of story. Haruko is a psychotic free spirit that works for the Galactic Space Patrol and decides to become a live in maid for Naota’s family. But she has a self-serving agenda that’s at odds with the looming corporation of Medical Mechanica. And for some reason Naota’s head is a portal to other dimensions that robots are sucked through and then fought by Haruko.

/ If that sounds a little hard to follow, FLCL manages to be catagorized as drama, mecha, comedy, action, science fiction, and romance in just a 6 episode OVA. As I was watching it I kept thinking how pre-teens who simultaneously play games, listen to music, text message, and talk on the phone would eat this thing up. For anime veterans you’ll notice tons of parodies and references to other shows.

// Wrap up: This is ADD anime eye candy. If you’re distracted easily and get bored by say, reading a book, then this is definitely for you. But if you are looking for story and character development, keep looking.
