// Synopsis: After being driven
out of their kingdoms by the Adversary, all of the mythical characters
from stories seek refuge in the human world.
// Review: There have been all number
of different spins put on the classic fairy tales, but this is my favorite
and most original take I've seen yet. Every character you know from
bedtime stories read to you as a kid are real but exist in their own
realms. When the sinister Adversary invades with his vast conquering
armies, the survivors seek secret exile in the Mundane world, namely
ours. It's very fascinating and very adult.
/ The first story arc (which was one of its many Eisner winning tales)
has Snow White who is the deputy mayor of Fabletown and the Wolverine-like
Big Bad Bad Wolf solving a murder mystery. From there branch different
yarns of politics, betrayal, prejudice, and war. But the main story
is the neverending battle with the Adversary and their hopes of one
day taking back their lands.
/ The award winning cover art is simply gorgeous. The interior pencils
are just average but it's the stories that are so addictive. Creator
and writer Bill Willingham has such a creative interpretation on the
Fables and it's pretty cool how their magical abilities translate into
mutant-esque powers. It's also hilarious and shocking at the same time
hearing the likes of Cinderella cuss like a sailor.
// Wrap up: Fables is wildly inventive
and completely engrossing. It's really a new masterpiece on ones of
old.
