Silver Surfer Requiem comic mini-series
A fond farewell
// Synopsis: The Silver Surfer
is dying. As he faces his own mortality he says goodbye to his friends,
his loved ones, and ponders what effect he had with his time in the
universe.
// Review: The Silver Surfer got
lumped in with those other old school super heroes like The Inhumans
and Captain Marvel who are no longer relevant in today's rock, hip,
emo, grunge comic universe. It's a little sad for the herald of the
Devourer of Worlds who was the most powerful being in the Marvel universe
second only to Galactus.
/ In this 4 issue mini, once he realizes something is wrong he travels
to Earth to see if Reed Richards can do anything to help him. From there
he has a serendipidous meeting with Spiderman and later stumbles in
the middle of an inter-planetary war on the way to his home planet one
last time.
/ It was interesting and touching as he contemplated the type of existence
he had and if he did enough to atone for the sins he committed when
he was killing in the name of Galactus.
/ The artwork was a little hit and miss, but for the most part the water
colored panels looked really good. The writing was also well done and
the human side to the surfer was very real and well developed. I was
a little disappointed with Spiderman being too much of a wise-acre and
most of his jokes were forced and contrived.
// Wrap up: I was never a fan of
the Surfer. In the words of Spiderman, even "the surfboard is a
little hokey." Regardless it's a great story of the emotional journey
someone takes as they are facing their impending death.
