Sinestro Corp comic
Sinestro Corp comic event

The darkest night

// Synopsis: Hal Jordan is back and just in time. After Sinestro was banished to the Anti-matter universe he has been licking his wounds and has recruited his own corp bent on destroying the Green Lantern Corp and possibly the universe in this epic comic event.

// Review: I've always been a Marvel guy...and Archie comics guy. The only time my geeky heart has ever strayed into the DC universe was for the occasional Frank Miller Batman book or the fantastic Justice League cartoon. The only Green Lantern comic I ever read was a 30 year old issue. I never got the whole yellow thing. Well in the last three decades this title has surprisingly grown up and matured like your friend's kid sister.

/ Apparently Hal Jordan, the greatest of all the Lanterns has been possessed by Spectre after he nearly single handedly destroying the Green Lantern Corp when he was possessed by Parallax. With the help of the other three human Lanterns he has been essentially reborn in time to go up against Sinestro.

/ Somehow Sinestro has created an evil version of the Green Lantern Corp, but instead of controlling his rings with willpower, like the green ones are, these yellow rings are manipulated by the ability to instill great fear. So Sinestro has marshalled an army of villains along with some seriously powerful badasses and has declared war on everything.

/ What results is a 17 issue event where every issues is bursting with non-stop action. Sometimes the issues in events like this can be a little unbalanced with bursts of action mixed in between slow moving convoluted plot exposition. Not the case here. Plot points are revealed in the midsts of people getting the snot beat out of them. There is almost too much action if there is such a thing.

/ But like with all other DC events, its great asset continues to prove to be a consistent plot thorn: Superman. He is just too powerful. So during the main battles he is inexplicably off battling fodder when he should be facing off against the main villains.

/ This mini-series has some really fantastic bad guys and the pacing is excellent. The conclusion also sets up the future direction for this title for years to come, and is so intriguing that I become a regular Lantern reader. The only real disappointment I had was that it really looked like a couple main characters were going to be offed but were then miraculously pulled from the jaws of hades.

// Wrap up: Balls to the wall action. Like me, you don't have to know much about the Green Lantern mythology or caught up with any of the current story threads to thoroughly enjoy this major battle royale.
