Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Til death do they part
// The skinny: A couple stuck in
a passionless marriage suddenly discover that for years each have been
living secret double lives as assassins now tasked to eliminate each
other.
// Review: I really wanted to hate
this movie. Brad Pitt and Angelina are charming, suave, rich, adept,
beautiful people. Movies are fanciful escapes, but this seemed to cross
the line of being in your face "look how ordinary you are."
Regardless of my own self-esteem issues this was an entertaining frenetic
movie in the closest Gross Pointe Blank action/romantic comedy vein
I've seen in years. It's akin to True Lies except that both halves of
the marriage are uber secret killing machines. While stuff is blowing
up around them as they and their own agencies try to kill them, the
two are discovering each other truly for the first time. When they finally
decide not to murder each other, their relationship blooms once more
amidst a blizzard of bullets, RPGs and flying shrapnel.
/ Throughout the film Pitt and Jolie navigate the sweeping undercurrents
of sexual tension without any gratuitous sex or skin. Some of the best
scenes involve the pair feeling each other out during a quiet meal at
home under the pretense of neither knowing their spouses trueidentities...
right before demolishing their house trying to kill each other. Vince
Vaughn's mouth plays buddy to Pitt and has a few classic Double Down
Trent scenes in his limited role.
// Wrap up: A romantic comedy disguised
as an action flick. This one has something for everyone: Angelina's
lips and boobs, Brad shirtless and grinning, and enough explosions to
make Michael Bay beam with approval. It's no wonder this made wheel
barrows of cash.
