Scrubs -
Pantheon series
The cure for the common show
// The skinny: It's everyday life
for three doctors and a cast of other eccentric personalities all working
at Sacred Heart Hospital.
// Review: This show's in it's 7th
and final season and yet remains one of the best kept secrets on tv.
It hasn't helped that every year it gets its time slot jumbled around
multiple times making it hard for even its fans to keep up with it regularly.
/ The first season began with JD, Elliot, and Turk as interns struggling
to keep their heads above water and not kill anyone. A comedy staple
is brief insights into JD's mind in the forms of embarrassing flashbacks
or his flights of flancy with his bizarre imagination. Both are very
similar to Family Guy because they share the same writer and producer
(Neil Goldman). Typical episodes involve a patient or relational situation
that usually result in some kind of poignant revelation about themselves
or human nature. JD's internal monologue usually serves as the narrator
which keeps all of the storylines cohesive.
/ Scrubs is a great break from the ultra-serious slew of other hospital
dramas like ER, Grey's Anatomy, House et
al. The humor is really random and produces genuinely laugh out loud
moments because the inner dork in us all can relate to all of the characters'
quirky idiosynchrasies.
/ One of the things I love about the show is that even in the midsts
of tragedy in the episodes, it can a moment later be funny without being
insensitive. Just when things start to become serious, the show still
finds a way to laugh at itself. It also uses an excellent job incorporating
guest stars. Most are well written and memorable rather than gratuitous
stunt casting.
/ Even now I still OD on re-runs, but sadly I have to say that seasons
6 and a 7 haven't lived up to the earlier seasons. Because of the this
accursed writer's strike, there is a very good chance that Scrubs won't
get the proper send off.
// Wrap up: This is another show
that a lot of people havn't heard of and few have probably even watched.
But if you give it a chance it can easily became a favorite.
