Call of Duty 3 // Xbox 360
The greatest generation
// The skinny: See
Nazis, shoot Nazis.
// Review: COD3 is the final installment
in it's WWII franchise as it moves on from the Lee Enfield rifle to
x-ray laser guided armor piercing coffee making super guns in COD4:
Modern Warfare. Being the latest WWII version and second one on next
gen, it continues to improve upon the last Call of Duty.
/ The graphics are more polished but the biggest improvement is with
grenades. In COD2 the enemy would constantly "cook" and even
toss your grenades back at you. Finally you get to payback Gerry in
same fashion. But besides those tweaks the game plays and looks pretty
much the exactly as the last iteration. They added a few mini-game-esque
elements where you have to follow button patterns for scheduled hand
to hand struggles, arming explosives and paddling a boat, but they don't
contribute to the gameplay.
/ One of the biggest disappointments I had was that they didn't include
a co-op mode. The AI is slightly improved, but you still have to Rambo
your way to the trigger spots and often your squad is just on clean
up detail after you've done most of the heavy lifting solo. And also
like all of the other Call of Duty's, there is no story and you just
participate in historic battles from the war. They attempt to introduce
characters with personalities, but there is no attachment to them and
didn't even remember any of their names.
// Wrap up: Feels more like an expansion
to COD2 which isn't a terrible thing. I wish the developers decided
to innovate more instead of going the safe Dynasty Warriors route and
basically cranking out the same game with a different number and inconsequential
additions to put on the back of the box. But if you love the Call of
Duty franchise, then here is more Nazi killing goodness.
